What would happen at each end of the tube?

With conventional building materials it would collapse. However with nanotubes which may be available in the future you could build something like a space elevator which starts on Earth and ends up beyond our atmosphere. It would need a counter weight though to keep it stretched and to keep it from collapsing. A tether would be better.

Nothing. Picture a soda straw. The air inside the straw is at equilibrium with the air outside the straw. This situation continues no matter how long you make the straw, as long as both ends are open. That ignores the rotation of the earth.
