Actually, "Vulgar" means nothing more than "Common". The word "vulgar" comes from latin, and the concept of some words being better or worse than others dates back to 1066 AD, with the Danish Invasion, and conquest, of England. England, at that time, was populated largely by the early Germanic tribes, who still spoke the germanic languages of their forefathers. The languages were made up of simple words, and to the Danes, it would have been considered beneath them, and their latin education, to speak the language of the common people around them. Since the Catholic church was such a powerful part of the educated ruling society in Europe, the precepts that made their way around the ruling class, eventually made their way into church dogma. Which words are deemed improper are set by the society that they are used in. For example, in England, in the modern day, the word Bloody is considered as foul a word as the "F" word is in America. And don't bother to call someone "Stupid(Estupido)", or "Lazy (Rabon)" if you live south of the border. Those are fighting words, and in both cases, are not considered suitable for polite society. So, you see, it is not actually a religious precept, but a societal precept, that decides what words are profane, and which are not. It just happens to be that most religious dogma tends to attempt to offend noone, in an attempt to not drive the person away. As such, there are so many semi-religious people in our society that are "on the sidelines", so to speak, just attending church, or have a cursory knowledge of religious overviews of relatives, parents, whatever, as well as faithful devotees that don't want to offend, that these words get deemed as profane in our society, and religion seems to get the blame for societal view. As far as the words being "vulgar", I guess they would be considered that, but not because they are considered profane. Rather, they would be considered vulgar because they are commonly used by the average person, especially those with little or no conviction over the matter. Tried to be honest. Hope this helps...
