It depends on what you mean by retarded. If you include tourettes, then yes. The most notable is soccer player Tim Howard, starting goalkeeper for Everton and the United States National Team. As for other things, I don't know.

My guess would be that a variety of athletes at the beginning of the last century would be diagnosed today with a variety of mental illnesses. We weren't as equipped to deal with them back then as we are now.

Jimmy Piersall of the 50's and 60's was treated for mental illness, as he suffered from a nervous breakdown. A movie was made about his struggles (from his book), "Fear Strikes Out." He joked that it should have been called "Fear Doubles to Left."

There seems to be a few "mental" managers lately, (baseball) and oh yeah wasn't there some guy who was a ref or something and bet on teams (recently?) ---Hey I'm female and if it isn't about the YANKEES or METS, I don't know much about it.....as far as anyone with a MENTALLY CHALLENGING CONDITION (the more politically correct way of saying it)....I don't think it would be possible for fear of that person getting hurt worse then any other player.... HOWEVER, come to think of it there seems to be a LOT of MENTALLY CHALLENGED GUYS IN PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING...
