I ask because both of my families and steps are increasingly racist and they both live in SC. I grew up here and there's a lot of racism, intolerance, 'fag-bashing', anti-intellectualism. People here think Bill O'reilly is their great leader after bush and that Oreiily's interaction constitutes acceptable behavior (in case you don't know, he talks *on TOP of people*)

I think because they are schoolteachers and doctors they say 'because I've seen it all' that they are entitled to having their cynical point-of-view. They call me 'insular' but I've actually traveled the world and been to nearly every state and lived in four of them...if anything, this insult is a projection. I think they know their racism disappoints and frustrates me and so they keep increasing it and making it worse to antagonize me. No that's too self-centered, isn't it? They're showing their true colors.

So my question is: is this about right for SC? Please tell me your south carolina experience differs.

I've not spent much time in SC, but that matches the attitude of SCians I've known.
What do you expect from a place where Bob Jones U is the pinnacle of "education?" Go figure.

The South is stubborn on their beliefs, which makes them stick to a time period, like falling into a spiderweb of racism, or stepping on the gum of intolerance.

Friend, been here all my life, and I am telling you that because of your experiences then that is YOUR point of view, mine is that people are all different and lots of how they are is how they were raised. If it gets under your skin, then you need to examine YOU. If you have been there and done that in so many places then by now you should know ALL places have their own mess, just like all families do. So, if it bothers you, work on why and how to let it go...South Carolina is full of good people and full of some not so good...you know huh? Blessings.

it's actually very sad because SC is such a beautiful place to visit, but there are certain aspects that are extremely offensive, and embarrassing to all of us as a country.

talk about living in the past....
