Live in SC. Need to get my BC corrected. I have my SSN card correct. So, would I need an attorney for this? The court house seems oblivious to what I am asking. Any suggestions?

I don't understand why they don't understand either, but none the less....

"Based on usage", means you spell your name different than what it states legally. Even by taking away/adding a letter seems to make a difference obviously.

No, you don't have to have one, but it would be a good idea. It will cost you about $300.

As far as I can find, your name on your birth certificate is your correct name, according to South Carolina. So you just petition for a name change - the court clerk should have the forms, not sure why they would be confused by it.

The state law that details the requirements to accompany the petition is here: http://www.scstatehouse.net/code/t15c049.htm

"Based on usage" -- what does that mean?

A legal change of name requires going through the procedures set forth in your state -- which least I checked required a court order.

Once you have the court order authorizing your change of name, you simply send a copy of that court order to the state where your birth certificate is on file, and have them change it.
