I live in vineland new jersey, and i am going to 10th grade... I go to public schools and last year they inforced a manditory dress code.. we are only allowed to wear collared shirts, no ripped clothing and no teeshirts... It is horrible, I dont understand how a PUBLIC SCHOOL can deny someone their education because they arent wearing a collar.. They put people in inschool suspension if they arent wearing a collared shirt. Next year [in september} they are going to make the dresscode strickter. I heard proper fitting collared shirts, no hoodies, and girls arent allowed to wear anything lose cutting.. basically if your showing skin your in violation of the dress code.. please help us I think this is unamerican dont we as students have rights ... their retarted reason for all this was a lie,.. they claim its for safety, they claim people can hide weapons in teeshirts.. HELLO?!?! BOOKBAGS, POCKETS?!?.

Perfectly legal. School administrators are looking out for the safety and welfare of the students. The idea of school is to prepare you for life after school. Not just book smarts, but the way things are "out there". Most employers do not allow face piercings, visible tattoos, and you must be dress at the minimum as business casual. No jeans t shirts etc. You can handle this for the 6 or so hours while you are in school. Look at it this way, you won't be distracted by that little cutie who always used to have her boobs flashing all over the room...........

Dress codes are 1st Amendment expression issues.

But like most 1st Amendment issues, students in public schools have less rights than adults. It may not be fair, but that's the law.

Courts have consistently ruled that minimal reasonable dress codes are allowed, because they serve an important govt interest (preventing student distraction) -- as long as the dress codes are reasonably structured and not discriminatory on their face.

That's the current status of the laws -- every year, a little bit more gets restricted for everyone and the courts say it's OK.

It is legal and there is a large body of data to indicate that uniforms improve the learning environment. Those that cannot afford the uniforms have them provided by the school system here in colorado. Nobody is being denied an education because they dont have a uniform. If a student fails to comply with the uniform code and is placed in ISS then that is a choice they made, not one that has been forced upon them. I am suprised they allow you to have bookbags, we got rid of them 8 years ago.

OH, the plight of today's youth! What indignities! What a violation of your civil rights! Oh, where will it all end.

Most schools have had to adopt a dress code due to the fact that most teenagers have no brains about appropriate dress for school - or anyplace else.

Girls want to look like hookers, guys want to look like pimps or thugs.

School is a place for education, not a fashion statement.

Poor you......

Hi Adam, the school ii use to go to we wern't even allowed to wear gloves, beanies & scarves because it wasn't dress code and ii think thats ludacris its not like we do it for fashion we do it to KEEP WARM! Us girls always got after school detentions & in school suspensions for things like that.. here are some things we got detention and suspensions for:

* having a singlet under shirt.
* changing hair colour
* wearing 2 jumpers ( we had to wear school jumper, and we wore our physical education jacket on top, so we got into trouble for that)
* Beanies, gloves & scarfs

they're just some off my head. But my point being why are we being punished for things we are doing to keep warm? we are missing out on an education! We go to school to get an education. Not any of this other crap.

Dress codes are prefectly legal in this country and most challenges made to the court system have failed. The courts favor the school boards decision. Live with it, when you get a job one day quess what "dress code".

It is about time. You are there for an education, not a fashion show.
