Does it look like mucus? Are his gills moving fast? Are they protruding out and red? Any other symptoms, like rubbing on objects in the tank, darting around the tank?

It could be gill flukes or a gill disease, kind of hard to say. You could try using some Coppersafe, and I would also use an antibiotic, if it is a parasite infection(gill flukes), bacterial infections are usually present also. I would start out using PimaFix-safe to use the same time as the Coppersafe. If you don't start seeing improvement, then you'll need to try a stronger med like Maracyn Two. I like to use the herbal bacterial remedies-PimaFix- first, especially when mixing 2 meds, meds have a tendency to stress fish. Also be sure to keep the water quality good.

It's hard to tell what this might be from the description - is there any way you can post a photo of your betta, or give us some more details? For instance, is the yellow stuff coming out from under the gill covers, or is it on the skin around the head? Does it appear like a powder on the scales, or is it long and threadlike? The more information you can supply, the better of an answer you'll get.

You can add info to this question by using the pencil icon under your question to "add details".

I'm not really sure what it is exactly, for I havent had much experience with betta's. I have one male and I am keeping him in a warm 55 gallon tank with other community fish. Might I suggest raising the temperature? If you are keeping it room temperature, then raise it. Betta's prefer warm water(78-82 degrees f) Hope this helped =P

If nothing else works, you might consider adding a very small pinch of salt to the aquarium. Small amounts of salinity help kill diseases.
