My friend has been divorced for 3 years. Her and her ex have a daughter together with 80/20 custody. The father gets her on weekends and through the month of August. The mother has her the rest of the time. The daughter, after visiting with the father, comes home to say that her dad is getting married. The mother is ok with that, she has been dating a few people and that is ok. My friend just wants to know if it was true, and who the new fiance is. Since her daughter goes over there, she feels she has the right to know. The father denies that he is getting married, yet to sluthing of our own, we found out that it is true that he is getting married. But I want to know, in Washington state, is it in my friends legal right to know if her ex is getting married, since there is a child invovled?

No, he’s not legally required to tell her. And usually when a person doesn’t it’s because, as someone else already stated, “the ex gets psycho”’.

And she cannot modify custody/visitation merely because he got married. The only way she could do that is the new wife is *proven* to be a danger to the child.

Not necessarily; however, she could file to modify the custody arrangement and use the fact that he is introducing a new woman into their child's life and you want to know what type of person she is. In the meantime, do more sleuthing and find out if she is safe to have the little girl around her. I would be worried about this as he appears to be hiding it and there has to be a reason why. It doesn't make sense.

Well I do know that if you get remarried and you apply for a second marriage license you have to show you divorce papers before you can get a new marriage license. but that is probably the only thing related that you have to show by law.

Nope. The ex is under no legal obligation to inform his former wife and mother of his child.

I don't know.. but if she finds out when, she can check with the Vital records division at the county courthouse where he resides and see if there is a marriage license issued and what the name of the bride to be is...

I don't know if its legal (that would depend on the sate and details of the devorce) but I would think so, and if the feiance is living with the ex, the mother has a right to know who she is, its the right thing to do

There's nothing more than common courtesy and honesty required. If he pays child support, he will have to continue. Your friend's relationship with her ex will change. You'd better hang around for her to cry and yell at.....good luck.

There is no law. My ex not only didn't tell me, but he didn't even tell his kids. Peach of a guy.
