Always try to water your lawn in the early morning. By early morning, I'm referring to around 5 a.m.! This is the BEST time for watering, bar none. Early morning watering is best due to: the lack of evaporation that takes place, low winds that can blow you lawn dry, high humidity and morning dew that adds to the moisture. Early morning watering helps to prevent lawn diseases that can be caused by watering at night because it gives your lawn time to dry by night fall. Obviously, this can be best accomplished with a sprinkler system, unless you just can't sleep, especially during the summer months

Night is the best time to water the lawn because it's most efficient then. The sun is not out to evaporate much of the water before it absorbs.

Note regarding the worms thing: My dad and his younger brother grew up during the Depression Era in Northern New York State. They lived across the street from a cemetery with a sprinkler system. At night they would go over and turn the sprinkler system on for a while, then go back over and collect the earth worms - which they sold the next day in front of their house. This was big fishing country along Lake Ontarior and some weeks they made more selling worms than their father did in his regular job. So don't knock it.

This practice is BAD for the lawn. It promotes fungus and mold and the grass doesn't soak up as much water at night. But it's not crazy- many people do it. My neighbor does it and he has several brown spots in the lawn to show for it. I mentioned this to him but I guess he doesn't belive me. Nearly every single lawn care cooperative that you will ever find will always tell you to NEVER water at night. The best time to water is early morning.

PS- yes, it does rain at night, but water on a regular basis- at night, as part of a irrigation program for your lawn, and you will promote fungus and cause other problems. (Esp' with cool season grasses when the temps reach 85 or more with high humidity). I guarantee it.

That is the usual way that automatic sprinklers are set. Because you don't have the heat of the sun evaporating the water spray it is the most efficient.

When there is a water ban in effect sneaky homeowners set their sprinklers specifically to work at late night so no one will catch them watering during the ban. However by looking at the dropping of the water tank levels the water department can tell what hours sprinklers are on. They go around the next night at that time with a spotlight and a big book of summonses. It gets a lot of revenue and is great for enforcement.

Daybreak or just before dawn is the ideal time to water your lawn. Evaporation is at a minimum, and the rising sun will quickly dry the grass, reducing the chance of disease.

Early morning is the best time to water the lawn. Night watering doesn't give the grass time to dry and cause eventual problems to your lawn.

I dont think that is crazy. its better to water after the sunset or before it rises. i always water my garden at night, that way the sun wont dry it out right away and it gives the plant a chance to get its moisture without competeing with the sun.

Morning's the best and night is right if it's night or nothing. Night is right especially if you want worms.
