I really believe that to forgive is a very important lesson and one that has to be internalized first. Anger is a flame. It can destroy from within if unchecked.
That doesn't mean we shouldn't protect ourselves or be careful around those that have done or said something hurtful, but true forgiveness, that for me is easy if asked for sincerely.

It has always been sincere from me except for one time. I told him I forgave him when he was in his death-bed so IF he had any remorse he could possibly die "in peace." So maybe I HAD forgiven him or why else would I have told him that? He never asked for forgiveness, by the way.

I don't easily forgive people who hurt me. So when I say "I forgive you" it is sincere. I rarely say it. This is my way of answering. Hope it helps.

I rarely say "I forgive you" because in my heart I've already forgiven you for what you did. But if you ask for forgiveness I will say it, because if you have the courage to ask, I will definitely forgive.

It's sincere but only if the person has not lied to me, that only makes it worse.
