not that much, plenty of rain, and storms, not that bad on hurricanes, very few an we are more inland than places like galveston.
certain parts of hoston have high crime rates and the schools aren't that great. we moved out of houston to a city a few miles away, Pearland. It's great, has mild weather, has low crime rates and great schools. it's expanding alot and is perfect for familys.
good luck.

You need to understand how hurricanes work. They are very unpredictable. Oh yes the weathermen have computer models that can give an idea where they MIGHT go. Might being the key word. They really cannot tell you 100% what cities get the most hurricanes. Houston has just as much chance as any other city that is the same distance from the coast of getting a hurricane. Keep in mind that before Katrina, New Orleans had not had a hurricane in a long time and boom they get hit with one of the biggest in history.

You also need to understand how torrnados work. Houston is not in what is considered torrnado alley. I believe that is centered around the state of Kansas but I'm not sure. So we don't get as many tornados as they do. It is like saying a city that is not on the coast will not get as many hurricanes as a city which is. However, a torrnado can happen in Houston.

I have a house in Houston. I live about half a mile from a bayou. (If you don't know what a bayou is, it is an open drainage ditch that takes rain water to the ocean). My flood insurance is like $100 a year.

I do not have children and do plan on having any children so I cannot comment on schools and chidren activities. I am also in a long term relationship of 12 years and I no longer do the nightlife thing but when I was single I found it very satisfying.

I currently live in Houston.

Although in Texas, Houston is not really in a tornado prone area.
Hurricanes are never much of a problem, Homes here are built well for hurricanes.

The main problem is the very hot and humid weather. It rains almost every day during the summer. The heat starts in march and lasts until october. Humidity is year round.

If its just Hurricanes and Tornadoes you are worried about you should relax. I've never even seen a tornado and I've been here for 18 years. I've been through at least 6 hurricanes. None caused more damage than a few roof tiles missing, portions of the fence falling and minor street flooding.

My schools were all pretty good. There are many school districts in the Houston Area though. Find one you like.

Night life is just as much as any other city, you just need to know where to look.

There are great museums and parks for kids. Lots of things like miniture golf and arcades like dave and busters for the older kids. South East Houston's Clear Lake Area (next to NASA) has a lot of young families and new homes.

You stand a much greater chance of being in a tornado or hurricane in Florida than in Houston or southeast Texas. The Houston area had a brush with Hurricane Rita in 2005 (some had more, most had less), and before that was a lot of rain from Tropical Storm Allison in 2001.

Insurance is no more expensive for a home here than anywhere on the Gulf Coast. In fact it is cheaper here than in Galveston. Houston is far enough inland to where it is hard for more than a Category 2 hurricane to hit (or if higher, it dissipates to this level).

I live in Houston, and I enjoy it. If you live on the south/ southeast sides, then you will have to worry about hurricanes. The other portions are town are far enough from the coast to not have to evacuate. But Houston has been pretty lucky when it comes to hurricanes. I don't think we get any tornadoes really.

There is so much to do with the kids! There is a rainforest inside a pyramid at Moody Gardens, a restaurant with a tiger and a ferris wheel, a zoo, great museums, sports teams, and a new waterpark in nearby Galveston, etc.

If you want a good school, you will generally need to live in the suburbs.

If I could change anything about Houston, it would be the heat and the traffic. I like the affordable housing, good availability of jobs, and all of the restaurants and shopping.

I'm from Houston, Texas, though it's been alot of years since I resided there. No they don't have tornadoes and hurricanes. It's a huge city. I lived out 45 north, around Spring Texas, which has became Metropolitan. Good Luck in the city. It's like any other city, there are good areas and bad areas
I just read the person above me's answer. I hate San Antonio, it's basically Hispanic, and they don't pay decent wages. Austin Texas is awesome, a large college town. Fun, fun, fun, free concerts in the park, great night life. Just a beautiful and wonderful city. It's geared towards the young college kids......all I can say is out of anywhere in Texas, there are only two places worth living. Austin, Texas and South Padre Island, Texas, down by the Mexico border

It all depends on what kind of lifestyle you want and why you are looking at moving here (family, job offer, etc).

I have lived here since '95 and I love it. If you live anywhere on the Gulf Coast, you are at risk of hurricanes - I moved here from Louisiana and in my life I have only been in maybe 3 BIG ones where property damage and flooding was a problem. Tornadoes are a West TX thing, rare here. If you don't buy a home in a flood plain it is comparable to any other urban area costwise.

There is a lot to do for children - museums, amusement parks, lessons and camps of all kinds. You can find good schools in various parts of town - I live right around the corner from an Exemplary School and Broad Prize winning school and a YMCA.

Plenty of nightlife. I love it here, and I chose to stay here rather than move back home when I divorced 5 yrs ago. Any place that you live is as good as you make it, and as good as you see life to be. People are friendly and life is good.

Hi there! I live in NW Houston and love it. I lived in SE Houston for about 20 years before I moved to the NE area and I don't remember worrying about Hurricanes and Tornados. And I definitely don't worry about it now. I worry more about getting hit by a person driving and talking on their cell phone.

Houston is such a big city and there are so many options as to school districts, subdivisions, etc.

Oh, by the way, insurance is a little more expensive on the SE side of town than NE or NW.

If I can help you, please let me know. I'm a licensed realtor in Texas and you can visit my site for information about Houston, Homes, Schools, etc.... www.har.com/rocio

Houston is at a great risk of hurricanes. I live here and have been through 4. When there is a hurricane, there are tornados, too. Schools are only good in certain areas and those areas are expensive. Not much night life.

Hurricanes don't hit here very often, same with tornados. You can expect some very hot, and extremely humid summers.
