Ok Ladies, I have gotten mixed reviews about this question when looking it up in past answers.

I know that Provera DOES NOT make you ovulate.. it is only meant to bring on your period..clean you out.. and regulate an irregular cycle. I also know that women who don't ovulate take provera and clomid to menstruate and ovulate.

The question I have is this: If you already ovulate on your own will starting Provera prevent ovulation?

Please only answer if you know this for sure. There is a lot of confusing information out there. THANKS!!!!

Just to clarify: I am talking about Provera NOT Depo Provera which is a bith control. And yes I am smart enough to know that you can't get pregnant on bith control. Again PLEASE answer ONLY if you know what I am talking about. Thanks!!

After you ovulate in a typical cycle, the corpus luteum--the follicle that contained the egg--begins to produce progesterone. This progesterone starts to be produced immediately after the egg is released and continues for about 14 days. The purpose of the progesterone is to thicken the lining of the uterus so a fertilized egg can implant in about 8-12 days, and also to tell the ovaries to not release anymore eggs. In some women it takes 24 hours or so for the ovaries to get the message and another egg or two may be released in the meantime--this is how a lot of twins happen.
When you begin Provera to bring on a period your body gets the same message that there is progesterone and therefore the lining of the uterus needs to thicken and the ovaries need to not release anymore eggs But if you were very close to ovulation when you started the Provera then it is possible that you will release an egg within the first couple days of using Provera. After that the progesterone is pretty high and it is very very unlikely that you would release an egg. The typical dose of Provera is usually 5-10 days so if you were to ovulate during the first day or two of using it and you had sex and the egg was fertilized, by the time it traveled back down the fallopian tube and implanted in the uterus--8-12 days later--then you would most likely already have stopped the Provera and be getting ready to start having a withdrawl bleed. This would most likely wash out the fertilized egg.
However, just like on birth control, some women will have breakthrough ovulation when on Provera and occassionally things will happen just right and a woman can get pregnant on Provera, it just isn't very likely.

If you are having to take provera to have periods then you are probably not ovulating anyway. (that is my understanding of the meds) I am currently on both and have been on provera now for a year and taken it previous years before. Have you been checked to make sure you are ovulating? My doctor told me provera will not help anything with ovulation just to bring your period on and that is it. Good luck hope this helps!

duh of course it prevents ovulation, it's a method of birth control and it isn't meant to bring on your period or clean out your uterus. Some women don't have periods while they are on their periods. Let me tell you again you can't ovulate while you're on a method of birth control it's common sense
