I am looking for a cheap sailboat that I can fix up, preferrably gutted to some extent. If anyone knows of one in Michigan, let me know.

When you get some free time, try driving around to some of the Marinas and ask if they know of any fixer upers. Sometimes they have abandoned boats they give you just to get rid of them.
It really boils down to, how much you want to spend or how much you want to fix. Do your math. Is it worth $1,000 and then fix adding $2,000 for a total of $3,000. Or, save yourself some labor and buy one ready to go for $3,500? This what you need to think out and brainstorm. Good Luck!

http://www.privateer26.org/classifieds/index.html First in list is in NY, not sure how far you want to go. Scroll down I think there a few in your State. The Kenner Privateer is a Classic that when restored will get the looks anywhere you go and stir up new conversation.

http://www.woodenboatrescue.org/ This is an interesting site, I keep an eye on. The boats are free. But, some look like free Firewood. But, there are some Classics to be found here. But, there many who look for these to fix up as a hobby, look around and see what happening. On left click "Free Boat" READ what next page say and at bottom click to look.

http://www.instructables.com/id/E6YIOICHKTEP2880DS/ Here you find a really cool article for DIY. How to get a free boat. Well a free boat that cost money to fix. LOL!!! But it well worth reading and at the end see they give it away and the new project they start with a Tri-Hull (trimaran).

Might look into buying a boat which has been donated to a charitable organization.
I donated a sailboat to a charitable group last year.
They sometimes re- sell on Ebay
Also, look into boat donation sites online (eg. American Cancer Society & make a wish type foundations) & see what they have in your area.
Might get what you want & do a good thing at the same time.
Best regards

Does not matter how many times you ask.
The answers are the same you stand more of a chance of seeing the devil ice skating in his own home than finding a boat that is worth doing up for free!
No body will give away a boat if it's worth doing up they will sell it to you.

Have you tried posting your request on craigslist.com or freecycle? You should have a local freecycle group that may have somebody closer who has what you want...
