I read according to a recent poll, that Nags Head on the Outer Banks of NC is currently the top vacation spot in the United States at this time...that is if you like the sea, surf, sand & sun.
I have forgotten the other places, probably because I am from NC & was surprised to see that.. I have lived at or near the ocean all of my life...& while I really love it, when I go on vacation, I like to go someplace else...like the mountains of NC.
NC is known as the Variety Vacation Land...partly because it is & I suppose partly for the tourist industry. For whatever reason, I like it. From the ocean...to the mountains....
California can say the same thing however. I lived there for 3 years & loved it, but 'I Like Calling North Carolina Home'i...(It's a song....I was born & bred here..)

The one where you relax and enjoy yourself.
I've vacationed in Hawaii, Oregon, Colorado, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Arizona, Washington, Idaho, New Mexico, and finally Nevada.
They were all "best" vacation spots.

Being that we all vary in what we like, it would be difficult to tell you which is best. Southerners like going Midwest or Northeast, and Northerners like going South and Southwest.
If you want beaches, Fountain Head, Sounth Carolina is probably the best kept secret. Florida and California are overrun. Another surprise that would be more than what you bargain for is the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Look for Mississippi Gulf Coast to become the place to go in the future. Everything is newer and better.

It depends on what you like to do on vacation. I personally love vacationing in San Diego. There is lots to do there, the beaches are fabulous, great food, good sports, etc....and you can easily drive to Los Angeles or Hollywood if you need more excitement.
