Because money will be diverted from other govt programs.
Just ending the Iraq occupation is itself over a billion dollars per year. And even if that continues for one or two or five years -- eventually that money will be able to be allocated elsewhere.
There are probably dozens of other places Congress can shift the money -- take a look at the size and complexity of the federal budget.
But yes, any universal health care program will almost certainly end up resulting in a tax increase. Though, if you're paying the same amount to the govt that you were paying to your medical insurance through your employer, is there really any net difference to you?

I don't believe it. Universal healthcare will be a monster and it will take more than just the money from the rich. It's sure not that way in Canada. There everybody gets taxed for it. Has anyone come up with any actual figures for this nightmare?

Bill Clinton promised no tax increase during his campaign, then proposed a record tax increase when he got into office and made it retroactive to boot. Since when has anything they said to get elected actually came to pass once they were elected. Bushes tax cuts brought in record revenue to the government, made unemployment the lowest ever, has more blacks owning homes and has the middle class investing more money. Some people have short memories.

By raising taxes on the rich, back to what they use to be before Bush's no billionaire left behind tax cut.
Let me add, Republicans have no credibility on speaking on things like this considering they are the biggest deficit spenders ever. Most of the national debt of this country has happened because of Reagan's and Bush's voodoo economics.

Ummmm...Clinton balanced the budget without raising taxes. Bush sold our country into massive debt. This argument that conservatives look after your money is sooooo tired.
Let's see, if given the choice between a U.S. missle silo in eastern europe and Universal Health Care, I pick health care.

If you beleive they wont raise your taxes, your a fool. We will be paying what we were where the communist Jimmy Carter was in the office. Raising our taxes does nothing but hurt the working man.

The government wastes so much money it could be done easily. Ending the drug war. Ending the war in Iraq just to name two.

They're gonna power the government the same way they power those eco-saving cars: with farts and rainbows.
