they can trace their family tree to people in America during the time of the Revolution....1776. My Ex and son can trace their family tree to 1700 or so in America and she is one, but only his daughters will be if he has any. Sadly (I jest) my connection to the Revolutionary war is thru Hessian troops that fought the colonists. None stayed here, and were not a direct lineage to me else my son would be of both the mad king and the new founded democracy...as per Yosemite Sam, "I'm a Hessian with no aggression" after Bugs blew him up.

The Daughters of the American Revolution is a women's group that traces their ancestry to persons who fought in the Revolutionary War (1776-1783).

They have the reputation of being snooty, snobby, and racist. For example, when a black women, tracing her ancestry to a patriot, tried to join, there was a movement to limit membership to "legitimate" descendants (translation: no black women need apply).

In the 1930's, the great singer, Marian Anderson, was denied the use of DAR's Constitution Hall, because Ms. Anderson was black. The incident prompted Eleanor Roosevelt, the first lady to resign from the DAR, and Anderson sang on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial instead. The DAR now claims that Constitution Hall was booked, and that its refusal to permit Ms. Anderson to sing there had nothing to do with her race.

Oh sure, and the Pope is a good Hindu too. If that was the case, why didn't they say so at the time, and why didn't someone explain that to Mrs. Roosevelt before she resigned? Back in that time, racial segregation and racial discrimination was common, and the DAR was just part of that scene. But lying about it does not make it go away.

An organization of women who can trace their lineage to "a patriot of the American Revolution".

"The DAR, founded in 1890, is a volunteer women's service organization dedicated to keeping America strong by promoting patriotism, preserving U.S. history and supporting education programs. "
