Almost anything organic except meats and grease that will attract rodents and weeds that will sprout from seeds.. Try leaves, grass clippings, vegetable peels, discarded fruits and small twigs, for example. If it can rot then it is a candidate.

Garden waste- lawn cuttings etc. Vegetable peelings. That sort of stuff - most organic stuff really - depends how smelly you want it to be really. I know a horse breeder who puts the afterbirths in there ((but it's like a mile from his house and he covers them over too !)
