Without question the Roman Empire, our laws and custom are in fact Roman. Most Americans don't know why the groom carries his Bride over the threshold of the bedroom door before the traditional consummating of their union. It is in celebration of the caring away and rape of the Sabine Women by the Romans. (From-Plutarch's Biography of Romulus.) But this is just one of 1000's of links to our heritage. We off course get much from many European nations aswell but they too are a product of the Roman Tradition.
Now that being said we have much more about us that is different from the Romans. Among these are that striking contrast between Christians being persecuted and slain in a Roman stadium and that of a Billy Gram Crusade in an American stadium. The Roman Army was brutal and destroyed its enemy's without mercy. The American Army wins the war, treats its enemy's as it wants to be treated, and in the end rebuilds their enemy. So I would say like Rome but much more not like Rome.
PS We are and never have been anything like that failed atheistic communistic experiment which historians(Because it is history) reffer to as the Soviet ("Union") Empire.
Moreover, America has already produced greater ,intellectuals minds, government structures, and economic prosperity than Rome and or any other empire to date. Moreover, if you think the down fall of America did not precede GWB by at least 90 years you have not been paying attention.

I don't think there's ever been any society quite like the USA. Never in the history of the world has there ever been a nation comprised almost solely of immigrants. Almost all other nations/empires were bound together through some form of tribal or ethnic union. The United States is bound together by a set of ideals to which almost everybody subscribes.

I think one might say that the Roman Republic was comparable, but, despite being a so-called republic, most of the populace had no voice whatsoever in public debate.

Sorry, I think your question is flawed and therefore unanswerable.

Without a doubt, the U.S could be compared to Rome. Like the Roman Empire, i dont think that the U.S will ever lose its hegemony by being militarily defeated.

Like Rome, I think the U.S.A will simply collapse on itself. I think that military success will breed increased political corruption, while the economic divide between the rich and poor will increase, racial tensions will lead to internal strife, illegal immigration, and lack of faith in the government will all contribute to a decline in the U.S global leadership.

Like Rome, I think the world will grow increasingly wary of U.S motiviations in which the U.S has told the world that it has increasingly used its military to 'liberate' and provide 'freedom' to weaker countries. This will result in U.S allies increasingly becoming wary that the U.S as a sheep in wolfs clothing.

The U.S will self-destruct unless it resolves some of the political, social and economic problems that come with being an imperial power.

It's definitely not Rome, Rome had some of the greatest minds, can't say the same for the U.S.

I would have to say USSR.
