The ideas contained within. I like books that spark something inside me. I appreciate authors who use language in interesting ways... the more expressive and descriptive (but not needlessly cluttered) the better.

That being said... I'll read anything. I am not a book snob. What makes a book worth reading is the journey from beginning to end... getting sucked for a time into another world. I know it's a good book when I don't want it to end... when I dwell in the author's world a bit too long, and almost mourn coming out of that world. It's the experience.

I read mostly nonfiction, so it's got to be somewhat bizarre in subject matter ( *bizarre* as in what people did in ancient cultures: cannibalism- stuff like that, reading about women who've undergone horrible times in their lives and have gotten through it- I just read a book about a woman who had OCD and she had gotten 5 plastic surgeries done on her by the age of 24) I sell books, so pretty much anything that isn't a romance novel or something you'd buy at the grocery store. If I am so entranced by a book that I stay up until 5AM with my Mighty Brite Book Light, it's definitely a book worth reading. (And that was "Scar Tissue" by Anthony Kiedis-great book.)

When i read the first page or chapter it just has to grab my attention to keep on reading. Also romance books is a big bonus points for me to actually think the book is worth reading.

Has to get my attention immediately... I'm into mysteries and history, and of historical mysteries, lol. It also has to be well-written and had some acquaintance with a proof reader. I once gave up on a book by a very famous author because it was so clumsy, and the spelling was so bad, I just couldn't work through it.

when it's a book that's very descriptive, but not too descriptive because then that would make it slower. is interesting and has a genera that appeals to my taste.
