I have a hole in this pipe shaft in the bathroom. Can I stick a little plug in there? Its leaking some white stuff from the hole, especially when I shake it. I was thinking of sliding a one inch plug in there to stop it from leaking this white fluid. (very weird) It also has a slight crack in it and smells like gas. Should I lubricate it with some vasoline before putting it in or something to stop the leak? I was also thinking of sticking some caulk in there. Would this suffice? Not sure what this pipe goes to, I'm not a plumber. Thanks for the help.

DANGER!!!
You need to stop shaking the pipe before you go blind.

There are only two kinds of pipes in a bathroom. One has supply water under pressure. That has contents of clear water with nothing white and would squirt out like crazy if it had a hole in it. The other is a drain pipe under the basin. That could leak without any pressure (gravity drains it). If it was leaking near the bottom then soapy residue that might be white could drip there.

Even if you don't know where a pipe goes to you can find where it comes from. Does it seem to come from under the sink where the faucet is? Does it seem to come from the center drain of the sink? That info would give a clue.

If it is the drain pipe you can seal its crack with one of those glues. The alternative is to take it off (with a bucket under it to catch any water that slops out) and bring it to home depot to get a replacement piece. You need a wrench to accomplish the take off and put back but it is a permanent easy solution.

Find out where the pipe goes to. What it may be. There shouldn't be anything other then a drain line or a water line. Someone in the past changed some line and was to lazy or forgot to take out the extra line. If you cannot find out where it goes and it bothes you that much, look for a thread on the end, if there's a thread, put a cap on it, simple as that. If you have to, go to Ace hardware and get the same size, ask for a "cap" and screw it on.

Seal a leaking pipe in a pinch with a C-clamp, a small block of wood, and a piece of thick rubber.

put the rubber on top of the pipe, put a block of wood on the top of the pipe and bottom and stick a c-clamp on and tighten it.

I have no idea what it is, but if you want to seal it off really well, then use Goop on the crack and to hold the plug. It will never come off (unless you use Goof Off). Goop is a great glue/ sealant. They sell it at home centers for about $4 a tube.
