Either the chain is stuck, broken or the rubber gasket is worn out. Open the ceramic lid, look inside (the water here is clean), and see if you can jiggle the chain and make it work. If not, Home Depo has replacement parts. Bring yours in and ask for help.

The flapper may be a likely cause, but also check the fill valve. If you have a ballcock type (thats the one with a ball on the end of a rod attached to a tower) the upper seal may be worn, you can tell if you see water coming out of the top. If so, replace it. The other type is a level type (the one with the float around the tower). These take a lot longer to go bad. The most likely cause is the float needs ajusting and water is spilling into the overflow tube in the center of the tank. Do this buy turning the screw or moving the clip on the thin metal rod that is attached to a lever protruding from the side to lower the float into the water, then flush your toilet. The water should fill the tank to approx. 1 inch from the top of the overflow tube. Keep ajusting until it is. If the water still continues run replace the fill valve. Just follow the directions carefully. And remember to turn off the water.

GeorgiaPeach, you need to change what's called the flapper. This is the component located at the center, inside the bottom of the tank. It's similar to a hinged rubber door attached to the chain that's connected to the flush handle.

This is really easy and inexpensive to change. Once you remove the old one you'll know exactly how to reinstall the new one.

i always incounter this problem with a ball or a flipper valve connected to a chain to the flush handle. i got tired of it so i replaced it with a "dual flush" the one with a flush for liquid and solid waste. anyway get one which uses a cable so it wouldn't tangle with other parts of your flushing fixture.

anyway this will also save water whenever you needed to flush liquid waste. this is a little expensive guess what, i had mine for 2years now and have never opened the flush tank since then.

best of all they come with 2years waranty :-)

If water continues to run and not fill tank the flapper is stuck open or the chain has gotten under it to stop it from sealing.Take the bacl tank top off and make sure the flappers seated in its proper position.Thats clean tap water there so don't worry about the hands if you need to submerge them.....George
