He was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, USA, so his nationality is American.
As far as his ethnic background goes, Johnny has Cherokee ancestry, inherited from both sides of his family but mostly from his mother. His great-grandmother, Minnie, was a full-blooded Cherokee.
As well, in an interview on France5 TV on 25 August 2002, Johnny Depp stated:
