The term "Laptop" was used initially for large mobile PCs but the term is now widely used for many mobile PCs. The "Notebook" term started when the laptop shrunk to notebook size (usually w/ 13" or smaller display).
BUT many are more comfortable w/ the term laptop because "notebook" tend to have two meanings in the office, in college and even at home.

They are used interchangeably nowadays. Used to be know as laptop because people usually place them on their laps (though not advisable because of the heat and cooling problem ! You've heard of laptop that catches fire and battery that explodes?).

But they got smaller over the years, now many are about the size of a writing notebook - hence the name.
