The car was a fake, they made three copies of the 1961 250GTO California out of fiberglass. The sound however was real according to one source but another says it is stock sound footage that may or may not be a 250 GTO engine.
Sounds like it to me. The engine is a 3000 cc (3 Liter or 183 cubic inch) motor but with a V-12 and the low inertia of the spinning mass it would rev high and the exhaust sound is a seductive snarl.

Imagine a six cylinder engine with free flowing exhaust times two! Most Ferrari engines sound so sweet at acceleration. V-12 and the boxer H-12 engines of the 60's to 70's all were mechanical masterpieces. But only when you found a master mechanic to work on them. The Italian tune-up ment running at high enough revolutions to clear the carbon off of the spark plugs. Then when you needed a real tune up it took weeks or months to order shims for the valves and a mechanic with specialized knowledge to make that 12 cyl purr like a kitten and roar like a lion!

I'm not sure because I haven't seen the movie in a long time. Often they use the wrong sound effect for the car.
