All birch trees have bark that peels easily. The bark looks like it has slashes in it, but it is the natural splitting of the bark. Several varieties of birch trees have bark that can be peeled and used as a form of paper or as a material for birch-bark canoes.

I'm not aware of any birch trees that have a smooth, unmarked bark.
