My son is 14, and he was watching The Terminator in his room. We walked in to see if he wanted to go out to Best Buy with us. My wife immediately cut the television off, and I asked what was wrong. My wife sternly insisted that he was too young to watch that. I understand that he is young, but he we let him watch any PG-13 movie (as he's 14), and ive talked about watching Rated R movies with him. He said he's watched them before, but only becuse his friends are allowed to, and he said he knows right from wrong. I understand what its like for a teen not to have any respect from adults with this matter, but he's very mature, gets good grades, knows what's real and not, but my wife wont budge. I said Ill watch the movies with him(as a guy thing), but my wife has put me on the couch about this, and believes that I should side with her, but my heart belongs to my son. I'll watch the movies with him, and Ill decide whats right and wrong, but my relationship with my wife is waning.
Help??

You should always side with your wife. You have to always come to terms with your wife, no matter what especially when it comes to children. -And viseversa!
There are a lot of kids who split parents. What I mean by that, is they will go to one parent for permission to do something and the parent will say no. The child is so determined to get a yes, they will often go to the other parent and ask them the same question to obtain permission and like some parents; they'll say okay. "That is how fights get started between parents." It's called, "Splitting". If you want a healthy marriage, you have got to set boundaries. If your child came to you and asked to do something, you need to respond, "What did your mom say?" Do you think there would be problems if you told your son that he could not do something and he went to your wife and asked her? -Then to top it off, she says yes. -It would get to you, because you expect your wife to stick with you when it comes to making a decision on something.
I do understand that we must filter what we allow our children watches on television. Being a parent, My husband and I monitor what our child watches. You have to be careful what we take in; meaning our bodies are God's Temples. What will you put in God's Temple?
1 Corinthians 3:17
If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.
Zephaniah 1:9
On that day I will punish all who avoid stepping on the threshold, who fill the temple of their gods with violence and deceit.
1 Corinthians 3:16
Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?
17If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.
18Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a "fool" so that he may become wise. 19For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: "He catches the wise in their craftiness"[a]; 20and again, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile."[b] 21So then, no more boasting about men! All things are yours, 22whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas[c] or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all are yours, 23and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God.

This may be something that the two of you need to compromise on. Maybe you two could review the movie together and discuss what you feel is any underlying messages or images that might be confusing to him. If you two can agree on a more adult movie for you to watch with your son, tell your wife that you will discuss with your son the movie afterward and ask your son what he thinks about some of those things. Totally sheltering your child isn't going to get the desired outcome she wants but you also must realize that he is still developing. Teens are bombarded with too much media images and messages. Parents need to have open discussions with kids about what they are exposed to.

Honestly, I side with you on this. This day and age our kids are maturing a lot faster. I think your wife is refusing to let your son grow up. I can see if its porn or watching these types of movies all the time. but I am sure thats not the case. try to come to agreement with your wife like agree to only to limit your son to a certain amount of R-rated films over a months time. Monitoring his grades during those months, if they slip or he starts acting violent, then she has a valid point. Make her a promise she can't refuse that you will have to bite your tongue on. Her booting you to the couch over this, she's the one missing out ! If you know what I mean !

It is very hard to find ay movie today without violence in it, so I think that he at least is watching a movie in his room, and not at a friends house or movie theater. You wife should watch the movie before deciding that it is not good enough for her son to watch. He will do these things whether you and your wife want him to or not and he is beginning to do what he wants even now.

Look it is better that you watch these movies and any other movies with your son. If you show trust and instruct him he wont find out about it in another way that you or your spouse wont like. Talk to him about why you like or dislike something and ask his opinion. It will let you know where he stands on the subject. As for you wife she needs to do the same thing. Good luck.

I think he should be allowed to watch movies. But if your wife is so concerned about this have her watch the movie herself. If she thinks that the movie has nudity or something not appropriate for a teen then he will not watch it. It also depends what movie it is. EX. The patriot is an R movie but there is no swares and no sexual content just the violence from a war. Check up on the movie. If your wife approves then he should be allowed, not just because of its rating.

You need to calmly sit down with your wife and DISCUSS why SHE feels he is too young - if he is as mature and stable as you claim, she should not be able to come up with answers. Personally, I watch ANY movie my kids want to watch BEFORE they do so I know if they are ready to handle it or not. Obviously there is some reason your wife is so hard nosed about this - she needs to explain herself, she can't just say "because he is too young" - what exactly does that mean? What is in these types of movies she thinks he isn't ready for?? OFFER to watch these movies with her BEFORE your son does - maybe that will work.

I think you might want to focus more on your argument with your wife. It seems like its a power struggle. I do agree with you about him being able to watch those movies, but I also think when it comes to forming rules or disciplining your son, you two need to be a united front.
And if that can't happen, you at least need some form of compromise. Maybe he can watch R movies, that are rated so because of strong language, or ones with violence (I think most of them are no worse than video games, assuming he's allowed those), or even sexual content.
Overall, I think you might want to remind your wife, it is a way to watch things and get your son's viewpoint on topics like sex or violence.

Why don't you and your wife sit down and watch the movies together first to screen them. Then the two of you decide together if it is appropriate for your sons viewing. It's called "team parenting"
Do not let your son play the two of you against each other. Good luck!
