you can get a Japanese or Mexican made strat (can't really tell the difference) for probably 200 pounds.

PS blink sux

Nothing wrong with the Highway 1 Strat - good guitar, if a little overpriced. If you do get one you may want to look at a higher output bridge pick up - a Duncan Invader, Bill Lawrence L500 or Dimarzio X2N will get you closer to the Blink sound if that's what you're aiming for. To be honest though, a Fender Mexican with the same pickup will save you a few hundred with no real difference to the sound.

£500 will get you a lot of guitar if you shop wisely. Ibanez SA range is very good VFM, Epiphone LP, Fernandes Ravelle (if you can live with the looks) and Schecter all have good spec models in your range too.

Happy hunting.

Ok, look each to their own - ref all above answers (and mine too!).

Gibsons, Jacksons and Fenders can all be very good in their own way but don't forget they all have different sounds and different feels. Personally, i like guitars with very thin necks and have an Epi Les Paul 1956 goldtop (which didn't short out after a year ;) ), a Fender telecaster (with a slightly chunkier neck) which has a beautiful sound and an electro-acoustic tanglewood which i use for more acoustic songs.

Point is, what overall sound are you going for? Gibbos tend to have a much thicker, warmer sound, whereas Fenders are thinner, slightly more 'clinky' high pitched sounding - which might be better for stuff like Blink/Ska/Punk etc.

Also, strats can go out of tune very quickly which can be a bit of a pain. Teles are much better in this dept.

My advice is visit loads of music shops before you buy anything, either in store or online - and play lots of different guitars until you find one that just 'feels' right and has the sound you want.

Don't forget, the amp you use will also have an effect on your overall sound.

Happy guitar hunting!

Let us know how you get on! :)

Yes, the Fender highway series is a 'natural' progression upwards from the Squires. You'll be surprised in the big 'jump' in quality/build from 'copies' to the real deal. There are allot of fancy, cool looking imitators and makes to tempt you..but there doesn't seem to be any point changing to a Gibson/Ibanez...unless your looking experiment further with your playing. These guitars have their own particular sound, action and feel. If I want to play Rock/Blues/Jazz etc. I tend to use my Fender..but for experimenting, Metal/Fusion etc I use Ibanez. . As you mature as a guitarist, you'll play less Blink 182 and want to experience other stuff..Fender guitars are very versatile..and you'll keep coming back to them. Try (if poss) the guitar before you buy it..you can play 7 identical 'off the shelf' guitars and they will all play slightly differently.

man listen to me, i've been playing for 7 yrs and I strongly recommend a Jackson or a gibson. Epiphones will short out in a year or less and fenders arent really as good as you think.

I'd go for an epiphone if I were you, but you're a lot better going trying guitars than just getting one off the net. I did that with an sg and it just wasn't right for me so I sold it for nearly half the price I paid for it, have a couple of 'test drives' first
