I was just wondering if you can find where someone is by knowing their IP adress

I'm sure the authorities can do this. You can just get the name and location of the local provider. So you would know the general area. But people can run their ip through a proxy to hide their ip.

Yes, within a city or major area. If you want further details than that then you have to contact the ISP who owns the IP address and find out who uses that IP address, but only if it's assigned to a specific location.

Some IPs are dynamic and change every so often and can only be traced through the time used.

They can't find out hardly anything...and *not* your name or location either. The only thing they get with your IP address is your ISPs (Internet Provider) location. So, if your ISP is out of state, like many are, including mine, they won't even know what state you are in.

To find out what they can see...do the following.

1. Go to http://www.whatismyip.com and write down the IP address it gives you...that's your IP address.
2. Go to http://www.arin.net and do a search on that IP address (right above the 'Search WHOIS' button and you'll see what I mean. It links to your ISP...not you.

Only by court order can anyone get information beyond that from your ISP.

More or less, yes. The IP address will take them back to your provider and from there, directly to your house.
