The beautiful south song...
If if you choose that we will always loose then i will sail this ship alone... basically its if the person feels that the relationship wont go anywhere at present then the other will go on with his life in that direction alone without them.
Like all the beautiful south and house martin songs... the meanings are there.....

The ship is life, not short for relationship. He's rhetorically asking to get the girl back, but the tone of it makes it feel like he's resigned to the end of the relationship, with there being another man in the equation. So he's getting advice of what to do to win her back, but he's thinking "But would she meet me half way?"

I don't know the song and couldn't find the lyrics so I would have to consider the phrase alone.
Sailing a ship is overcoming natures elements and using them to your purpose. Normally you sail with a crew but if you find yourself alone you have the resources to go it alone.

Have to say i disagree with all the above.
The song is about sanity, its about trying to get on the straight and narrow but failing and so saying "sod it, i'll do this without sanity". Girl / boy etc were all used to mask other aspects of the dillemma.
