I'm looking for a CPU replacement\upgrade and just curious on which core would be better to get for a P4 3.0GHz socket 478.

The Northwood 3.0Ghz\512KB L2 or Prescott 3.0GHz\1MB L2?

Both have HyperThreading and 800MHz FSB

Prescott would be the newer cpu.

Also less heat, and more powerful.

Be sure your mobo supports HT if you really want it.

BUT HT leaks a lot of electric current, turning the processor HOT. Many users just end up turning HT OFF to minimize HEAT.

I would rather go for a 3.0 -3.4Ghz Northwood and perhaps overclock it sometimes to 4.0Ghz.
