I have a two year old Medion Akoya (yeah, I know, but I'm saving up for a new laptop) and lately, it's been heating up pretty quickly. The fan is also making an awful lot of noise. Is there anything I can do?

Sorry, how do I flash the bios? I've never heard these terms before!

There is probably not anything wrong with the FAN, it is the laptop.

#1. Go to a laptop repair store (or even Geek Squad at Best Buy) and get the laptop cleaned out. You likely have a heatsink that is clogged therefore not dissipating the heat well and therefore making the CPU hot therefore making the fan run at its highest level (therefore the higher noise).

#2. Get a pad to go under the laptop (Chill Mat). Targus sells them for around $20 at Walmart and it plugs into your USB port and had fans that blow onto the bottom of the laptop. If you use the laptop on your lap you will notice there is no heat. Good thing.

The heat will get worse (hurting the battery and hurting the CPU).

There is a SLIGHT possibility the fan is going bad but I highly doubt it. If that were the case the computer would simply lock up (which you may be seeing already) in just a couple minutes.

As for a new laptop, they are incredibly cheap right now depending on what you are looking for ($500 for entry level, $700 for basic, $1000 for business, $1500 power, $2000 for ultra-thin).

I swap out laptops every year or so... it is a lot easier than having to take it somewhere to have it cleaned.

It's a pain to do I know but if it is not too bad and you are saving for a new laptop the pad may be all you need to keep the fan from kicking on and making a lot of noise.

I also suggest looking at your free space. If you do not have at least 9% free space, the i/o s can be contributing to the noise factor besides slowing down processes. Yesterday my computer was so loud, it sounded like it was ready for take off. I backed up on an external some folders (which took like 10 hours). Then I deleted about 9%of the files on the laptop hard drive. Ahhh, it s so quiet, thank goodness.

The noise in terms of volume isn't important, but if you hear scraping noise, its time to replace the fan. As far as the system running hot, by flashing the bios, you can change the temp/rpm at which the fans operate. Bios flashes are free from the mfgr's website. If the bios flash still doesn't work, look to replace temp sender or reinstall the heat sink/heat pipe.

You need to replace the fan. It is getting ready to fail.
