It uses no extra gas to start the car, where do you think that extra gas would go? the engine needs a set gas fuel ratio on the first revolution as it does on any subsequent revolution. It uses some electricity which is quickly recharged. Hybrid cars stop their gas engines every time you stop and restart it as needed. Practically though I would turn off the engine if you have to be stopped for more than a minute.

Yes it is worth shutting the car off. The stress on the car takes place in the morning when the engine is cold. Since it is warm in traffic, the starter is good for a million starts and the restart does nothing to hurt the car. This turning off of the car for 5 minutes would be like having a poor man's hybrid and doing the action that the hybrid does. It will save you hundreds of dollars per year whenever you do it. Pay attention and don't do things in the car while you are waiting. This may distract you and you may make a malfunction and lose control. So; Set emergency brake and be ready to restart the car, put it in the proper gear and release the emergency brake. Save gas, stop pollution, and save the engine wear too!

The more you start it the worse it is for the car, so i think it will be better to waste like an ounce of gas than have Starter problems...

shift to park or neutral.. you just never know when a starter may fail or any number of things that may leave you stranded in line.... 5 minutes of ideling is nothing.... longer periods may allow a build up of fumes
