Honda's are always reliable, but tend to cost a little more.
Cavaliers look sporty and are fun to drive and maintain pretty well.
If you could get your hands on a Mazda 3 or 6 you'd have to pay a little more but I think you'd be really pleased.
But finally I'd actually recommend a Saturn. You can find them for pretty cheap and they have a "plastic" exterior so it won't rust out and a timing chain instead of a belt to help it run a little longer.

Honda is probably the most reliable and cheaper to buy for looks and stuff, like my 1999 V6 accord
