I ask this because I have heard some horror stories from students who were caught using their email via the programs the school monitors the computers with. So, if I use their internet, with my own personal computer, will they be able to see that I went to yahoo email? I'm mostly concerned about the factor of sharing their IP.

They can, but they won't, unless they have someone on payroll whose job it is to sift through all internet communications.

In effect yes they can because it is a school they will have a cetralised server system where the internet goes through, now this server collects logs of anyone on the internet or network at any one time, so they can pull up the time, date, IP address of your computer if they are checking logs.
Be a pretty slack outfit if you can just login to thier internet without first providing your user ID ( School issued ). of you can then this will teach them to secure thier networks.

It is possible for them to know anything you did on the network, including any internet access, and the contents of any mail sent or received. They could not only know the IP address the activity was connected to, but also the MAC address which uniquely identifies the network card in your particular laptop.
To what extent such things are monitored varies by school. Any use of the school's network constitutes consent to any type of security monitoring and policies they may have.
To know exactly what you are doing on the laptop itself typically requires software on the laptop, which in many cases it is possible to install such software remotely without user knowledge on most Windows machines.

Absolutely, once you access their server, any traffic that you generate can be monitored by the school. They should disclose to you that access of their server constitutes agreement to abide by the school district's rules for computer use and applications. They do this to prevent students from downloading music from lime-wire and that being able to be tracked back to their domain IP and to limit the types of material and traffic being sent, mainly due to limited bandwidth available. School servers get really crowded and so they put in filters and firewalls to prevent a lot of traffic that would normally be used for inappropriate applications (viewing porn, sending streaming video, some chat sites etc).

They can see what your doing, but as long as you don't put any information that can be used to ID yourself on the internet your fine. They cant find you with your ip address because it changes for every network you go on.

It depends what kind of security the highschool has. But, most security systems can track the websites that you went on, but not what you did on the laptop. And if you log on through you're laptop they dont know who went on those websites.

Basically yes. They can see what web sights you go to. They won't necessarily be able to read what you did/do, but they will be able to trace every url/IP address you hit. It isn't hard to do.
