Back then when you bought a benz, it was like you were the only one with a benz. But now everyone buys a benz and it's too common these days to see one, it makes me want to go get another car like a Mercury Marauder or somthing else different other than a Benz or a BMW.

Lots of people like to just go out and buy a Benz or BMW to shoe everyone that they have lots of money. It's a shame that that type of people have turned BMW away from making sports cars and to making status symbols.

Well ... way back when ... Benz didn't have a very good distribution network in North America. And way back when ... Benz were never really that luxurious. The luxury image of Benz really only started in the 70's.

In Europe, especially Germany, people don't associate Benz and BMW with exclusiveness. They are very common ... even in the 70's. From 70's to today, almost every other car in Germany is a Benz or a BMW, and it isn't that expensive.

So ... why the snubbish image or the wealth symbol. That's very much a N American and Asian thing I think.

Even so, in Hong Kong, Benz was used exlcusively as Taxis up until the late 80's ... go figure.

To answer your question with a more critical thinking tone, here is my 2 cents worth:
- there are more well to do people in N America today than there were 25 years ago (percentage wise)
- Taking inflation into consideration, disposable income has grown sustantially in the last 25 years for the average N American.
- factoring for inflation, the cost of a Benz today is actually cheaper than 25 years ago.

And ... most importantly, about 20 years ago, when the first Japanese luxury brands (Acura & Lexus) were introduced, both Benz and BMW suffered significantly loses in market share. Benz and BMW responded by building better cars at significantly cheaper prices.

The European Union helped all European automakers by banning Japanese imports for 10 years from 1990 to 2000.

This 10 year ban gave Benz and BMW the opportunity to rethink their strategy and build better cars that suite customer needs.

So ... the upside of this Japanese luxury brand competition is that we (as customers) get better quality cars at reduce prices.

That in a nutshell is why more people are driving in luxury cars ... people are richer today, and the luxury cars are cheaper and better today.

Mercedes Benz = Luxury. Most people associate that car with luxury and most people who want luxury happen to be people with alot of money.

I think more so the reason why you see everyone with a "benz" these days, is possibly b/c they arent so expensive. You can buy a different class type of mercedes benz for less money than another class. At least thats what i have always been told, i could be wrong, but i think it has something to do with that.

I can understand what you are thinking however here are some things to know.

A 10 year old benz looks very similar to a new one and they are dirt cheap...

Mercedes and bmws are smooth, luxurious and most of them fast and very safe! Not to mention they wont blow up every few weeks...

Another reason people get them is because it gets the hot superficial b****s who see mercedes and bmw as a sign of wealth and power (cringe)

Cheers bud

One buys a Benz to show off the status symbol, another buys a comparable class Lexus to get more for his money.

Drive a 10 year old M-B in good overall condition, get a feel for the vehicle and count the squeaks and rattles. Now drive a 10 year old Mercury also in good overall condition and compare.

The difference is why people buy M-Bs.

If you do not know, let me tell you, you have the right to buy anything you want.
Was the point of your "question" to let everybody know that you "got rich?"
No? What was it then?
