Where/how should I start out? Some say go to culinary school, some say become an apprentice... I honestly don't know where to start. I'm done high school, I'd like to know the next step into becoming a great chef! Any tips/pointers would be greatly appretiated! Thanks!

These are the two ways of becoming a chef. On the job training and working your way up the ladder.........Drawback is you are only learning what that restaurant teaches you and your education may be limited. The best would be to enroll in an credited school with an associated degree in culinary arts. After completing a very well rounded course you will receive an AS degree but best of all you will find what your best and most talented at. With this degree you will be able to move up the ladder faster in any restaurant that you are working in. You could always work part time while going to school to add more experience for your career.

BECOME AN APPRENTICE-THAT WILL LET U KNOW IF THIS IS REALLY WHAT U WANT TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE BEFORE U SPEND $50,000 ON A CULINARY DEGREE. YOU WILL BE PAYING SALLIE MAE BACK THE REST OF YOUR LIFE FOR A CAREER THAT IS NOT GOING TO PAY THOSE LOANS BACK.

DO NOT LET THE ADMISSION REPS OR ANYONE ELSE THAT IS NOT IN THE INDUSTRY FOOL OR MISLEAD U TO THINK U WILL BE ON THE FOOD NETWORK OR U WILL BE THE NEXT EMERIL. U WILL NOT MAKE ANY MONEY STARTING OFF. EMAIL ME IF U HAVE ANY QUESTIONS lade587@yahoo.com

I'd suggest starting in culinary school so you can get down techniques and rules and basics and knowledge and blah blah blah and THEN! Then you become an apprentice, and let them show you the finer details and more intimate knowledge, rather than textbook/drill sargeant-driven knowledge of the world of food. This is just an educated guess, I've only been in the food-service industry for 8 years.

Go to school of coarse, thats a must.I never did but regret it.I can cook really well for my friends who always come back for more. But if you are going to want to get on the Food Network or a big resturant etc,go to a culinary school,it will look good on a resume'.Keep cooking and good luck!!
