I have a mix of male and female fancy guppies and i want to start breeding them..i have 3 painted tetras (yes, i know that it's really cruel how they are dyed, bu my mother got them for me and didn't know about them at the time). should i remove the tetras from the tank w/ the guppies while the have the eggs and fry?? it's a 25 gal tank w/ good cover (ie: rocks, plants, breeding grass, etc.)....if i do i have a 2.5 gal tank i can put the tetras permantly if need be.
thanks~Katie♥

Nothing. Almost all fish will eat the fry. Even the Guppy parents will eat the fry if they are not separated. Move the Guppies into the 2.5 gallon (if it's filtered and heated) and let them breed there. After they breed, move the parents back in with the Tetras.

I actually had 2 guppies when my family made a pond in our back yard. Those 2 guppies soon had babies in there. We never took care of them.(Apparently they could take care of themselves) Sure some got eaten, but thats natural. Your tetras will probably eat the babies along with the mothers but chances are those babies will survive with a few here and there. At one time, my pond had 200 guppies or so that came as generations went on from those 2 guppies we had. We moved them into the 55 gallon tank inside for the winter where a baby tiger oscar was being held. Only about 10 remained by the end of the winter and good riddens. If you could care less about your fry then let them be. But if you want all of them, then i suggest you place the mother in that 2.5 gallon tank of yours. When she drops the cargo, get her out of there. In the past generations, i have found deformities in some of my fry. Im guessing those were supposed to be eaten since they are more susceptible to predators but the mother was out so that never happened. Good luck.

first of guppy's don't lay eggs there live bearers and the tetras should be fine when your breeding guppy's first thing you need to do is put a Male in with a female then when the females gravid spot near the area were she poops out of its usually grayish brownish but it will turn black when shes pregnant then after about 3 weeks of the gravid spot being really dark then watch her each day checking her gravid spot mainly and when you start seeing eye type of things then put her into either the 2.5 gallon tank or a breeding net then she will most likely give birth 48 hours later or less then when shes given birth and there's at least 10 of them if she doesn't have this amount that's fine to put her back into the main tank if she has more baby's then they will get eaten it will improve the fishes health that eats the baby's then feed the fry 4 times a day tiny crushed up flakes

Eventually, you will end up with more guppies than you know what to do with. Use the 2.5 gal to raise a few of the larger fry and put the rest in the tank to fend for themselves. That way you will have a few nice guppies instead of a hundred that are driving you crazy.

i wouldmove the breeding female to that 2.5 gallons,

painted tetras and the other guppies will eat the fry.

when you know the female is going to drop her young, then move her over into2.5

have the 2.5 full of live plants and a sponge filter.
