Here's an article that says having two nostrils makes us better at following scents, "scent tracking". It's pretty much the same as judging the direction from which a sound comes when we hear from two ears. http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2006/12/18_scents.shtml

Except for the visceral organs that are singular, we have two of everything. The chief advantage seems to be functional redundancy. Poke out one eye and you can still see. Lose one testicle and you can still impregnate. And so on.
