Could you put in an additional please. Give us the numbers or what of the 3 failed. If it failed HC at idle and cruise, it;s most likely the catalytic converter. If it failed cruise but passed idle, it might be fuel injectors, spark timing, etc. There are 3 gases that are checked at both idle and cruise.
(HC, CO and NOx) Excessive numbers at any of the 6 test points will fail the car.

What didn't pass? I assume it was checked during the yearly inspection in a state that requires reduced emission controls. It could be the catalytic converter or a smog pump that is failing. I recommend a mechanic to find the cause.

could be any number of things, all depends on how badly it failed. Could be a bad EGR valve, O2 sensor, bad catalytic converter, out of tune, dirty oil, etc. etc.

good luck.......
