I'm a 20 year old University student and I'm despirately wanting to buy a Laptop.

I've never had one before, so I have no idea what to look for.

I own a 30 GB iPod, so I listen to alot of music, so I'll need lots of space, I think.

I'd also like to be able to watch movies on my Laptop.

And of course, the internet, but that's no big deal.

Please let me know if there's a certain laptop I should look into.

Also.. I'm looking for one under $1,000.

Thanks!!!

Look at HP and look at one with a hard drive capacity around 120 gb, 1 to 2 gb of ram, a nice sized widescreen monitor, maybe a dedicated video card for the movies, and that is about it. Dont over pay for a fast processor. Your processor shouldnt be more than $150 extra on the options list. you need around 2.0 ghz processor.

Try your school's computer purchasing program.

For what you've described you need a relatively large HD, 100Gb+. Plus I'd recommend that you get a system with a DVD RW(read write) drive. You want to make a regular habit of backing up your music/movies in case something happens to that HD. I also wouldn't go for less than a 15.4" screen. 17" would be better, but much more expensive.

Most universities have computer purchase programs that offer significant savings over what you could buy on your own. The programs are usually with top brand names like Dell or HP - you won't go wrong with either. The reps at the school will be able to help you find something that works for you.

A Bargain Hunter's Fantasy Laptop (Inspiron 1420 Review from PCMag.com - 6/26/2007)
The Dell Inspiron 1420 is destined to populate the homes of school-bound teens, sophisticated and unsophisticated computer users, and just about anybody who is looking for a terrific deal. The laptop's look has changed (for the better), and just because it's priced at $1,099 (direct) doesn't mean you'll get shafted with cheap processing parts. It's one of the few laptops, if not the only one, that gives you discrete graphics, a surplus of memory, different-color frames, and a host of other features that usually cost extra.
