Has anyone ever run for president and lost and then been elected president some years later? If so, who? when?

Grover Cleveland won in 1884 and 1892. He lost in 1888. He is generally counted as the 22nd and 24th Prsesident of the U.S.
Richard Nixon was narrowly defeated in 1960 but won in 1972.

There are more recent examples too! Ronald Reagan ran in 1976 and narrowly lost the nomination to Gerald Ford 1187 delegates to 1070. And George HW Bush won the Iowa Caucus in the 1980 campaign, but after Reagan won New Hampshire and quickly gained momentum, Bush dropped out of the race, later accepted the VP nomination, and then was elected President to succeed Reagan.
