Nearly all cottages have sewage holding tanks. That is part of modern plumbing. Human pathogens spread in drinking water. Consider the Black Plague. Lack of sewage treatment was largely responsible.

Sorry Richard F, but the Black Plague (Black Death, Bubonic Plague) was spread by fleas which were carried by rats. It is not spread through the water supply. Although sanitation was also to blame.

Sewage-holding tanks and self contained sewage disposal systems (septic system).

If you are talking about an actual sewage-holding tank without an attach weeping tile system, it is required because the land where the cottages are located is not suited to for proper opperation of a self contain sewage disposal system.
Some possible reason :
Not enough propoerty to accomodate the weeping tiles
which dispose of the waste water.
Water table (level where ground is saturated with water) is
too high for the system to operate. The weeping tile bed
should be at least 2 feet above the water table when the
water table is at it's highest level .
Terain too rocky and or too steep (too much slope) for the
tiles to drain evenly.
There are more.

The sewage holding tank has to be pumped out on a regular basis. It is not a self contained sewage disposal systems (septic system).

This sewage that is pumped out of holding tanks should be disposed of in a proper sewage disposal system. Some unscupulous operators dump the sewage into remote streams (not environmentaly friendly, also a potential health hazard).

A self contained sewage disposal systems (septic system) usually have a split holding tank (septic tank). The first part is where all your sewage enters the septic tank. This is where the biological break down of solids and liquids starts. The second compartment is for liquid only. The biological break down of the liquids continue in this compartment. The discharge from this compartment goes to a header and or distribution box. From there is is routed to a special area called the weeping tile bed (tile bed for short). The excess water is dissapated into the soil from these tiles. the area above the tile bed should be grassed for proper operation of the septic system. Most of the water dissapated from the tile bed should evapourate. Grass is the best for this to be effective as the roots of the grasses do not go deep enough to clog the tiles. The grass roots draws the water and then the grass leaves releases the water into the air as vapour. If this type of system is setup and maintained properly, it is very environmentally friendly.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck
