Reinstall the drivers by using the cd that came with motherboard/sound card or go to the manufacturers website to get the most recent ones. Also, make sure you go to sound devices in control panel and choose it as the default sound device.

Some questions should be answered before any answer is given. What were you doing that you had to reboot? Is it an integrated sound card, or a pci soundcard? What operating system?

Most likely its as simple as reinstalling the driver, since you proply installed an update or some software that kicked out driver.

right click on my computer (in start menu or desktop), click properties, click hardware tab, click device manager....

there should be a yellow question mark saying multimedia sound device....IF you described problem right and the computer still sees the soundcard.

right click it, click remove or unintsall, click yes to confirm, and then restart.

If you dont see anythign like described, then those previous questions and more information would be needed

Try a restore

Restoring the Computer to an Earlier Operating State
NOTICE: Before you restore the computer to an earlier operating state, save and close any open files and exit any
open programs. Do not alter, open, or delete any files or programs until the system restoration is complete.
1 Click the Start button, point to All Programs→Accessories→System Tools, and then click System
Restore.
2 Ensure that Restore my computer to an earlier time is selected and click Next.
3 Click a calendar date to which you want to restore your computer.
The Select a Restore Point screen provides a calendar that allows you to see and select restore points.
All calendar dates with available restore points appear in boldface type.
4 Select a restore point and click Next.
If a calendar date has only one restore point, then that restore point is automatically selected. If two or
more restore points are available, click the restore point that you prefer.
5 Click Next.
The Restoration Complete screen appears after System Restore finishes collecting data and then the
computer restarts.
6 After the computer restarts, click OK.
To change the restore point, you can either repeat the steps using a different restore point, or you can
undo the restoration.

Well windows xp is supposed to auto-detect audo cards, was the message that the hardware could not be detected or the device driver was not installed? Audio cards have cords running out of them so it's possible that one of the cords got pulled and it pulled the sound card out of it's slot. It's also possible that something is wrong with your bios (the software that pops up before windows). It's hard to troubleshoot without more information.

You need a driver for whatever type of audio device you have.
Most likely you have an onboard audio chip. Go to the computer manufacturer's website and you can find a driver there.

Like the other guy said, you have to either reinstall it with the disk that came with your computer/motherboard/sound card, or you have to download the most recent one from the support website of your manufacturer. Once you have it, make sure that it is selected as your default, you can do that through the control panel, then sound. Hope that makes it a little more clear for you.
