Using BR.com's play index, with criteria of:
- at least 50 games played;
- at least 100 career AB; and
- at least 50% of games played as pitcher

the answer is Al Spalding, who batted .313 (613 for 1958) in 411 games, 347 as a pitcher, from 1871-78.

A HOFer, Spalding was a darn good pitcher, then retired and founded a line of sporting goods.

Shifting to the modern (1901-present) era, we find the immortal Erv Brame, who played for the Pirates from 1928-32, 218 games, 142 as pitcher (and no other defensive position recorded, so he probably pinch-ran or pinch-hit (!) a lot), and batted .306 (121-396) in his major league career.

Babe Ruth in his career the babe won over 90 games pitching mostly with Boston. When he came to the Yankees he focused on batting and pitched the occasional game. Thats why ruth was the greatest baseball player ever!

Babe Ruth batted .342 for his career, but Wes Ferrell was a pitcher full time and had a .290 career average along with 39 HR's.

Not too shabby, eh?

Great question. I don;t know for sure, but i would think that Red Ruffing would be one of the more productive ones. He had a career batting average of .269, which included 36 home runs, and 98 doubles over his career. His career included 9 years of batting over .300, with his best year of .374. He also knocked in 20 or more runs in 5 different seasons.
