It is obvious that you have not seen "almost all the jazz groups" because many of them, and not just Latin specialists use hand drums and small percussion. Corea's Return To Forever band used Airto Moreira and other percussionists always. My brother was just talking to me a couple of days ago about playing hand drums with his rock and roll show group! As another poster mentioned, it is a matter of economics more than anything. Certainly Latin specialists would not do without the percussion but many bands, from Allman Brothers to Frank Zappa always use(d) percussionists. The United States Government backed Airmen of Note always use percussionists. Many bands will employ their percussionists for bigger shows and recording projects, but just use the drum set on smaller gigs. It is the same reason you find so many one-man-bands and small combos and so few "big" bands working today. It is economics!

It depends on what part of the world you are in. I know that where I live, in the central United States, there are not a lot of conga and bongo players. I know that in my band, I need a percussionist of some sort, and a drumset is just a lot more versatile than congas, so I use a drumset in my band. I live in a smaller college town, and the demand for music is not as high here as it is in major cities. If I lived in a major city and felt that it would be worth it to increase the size of my band, I would.

So I guess the answer is, that it's more economical just to use a drumset rather than congas and bongos.

Well those are some.. Salsa music I guess.

Jazz music is soothing, and somewhat saddening.

Those instruments clearly aren't something to depressen the song.

Listen to, "Nishe, by Muse." They clearly have a beautiful song right there.

And imagine adding in one of those instruments. Wouldn't be too pretty, would it?

Imagine: The beautiful, heart warming bass. And then all of a sudden maracas and congos come in. BANG BANG BANG.

Untrue. A lot of Latin jazz bands use them as do some of the greats such as Chic Corea.
