What I'd reccomend is a basic "Be Here Now" approach.
First, deep breathing can help calm anxiety. Find a place you
are comfortable, loose clothing, no interruptions. Sit upright,
and inhale slowly and deeply. Focus on how your lungs take
in the air; feel it replenish your body with oxygen. Be in that
moment.
As you exhale, let some of your tension flow out with the air.
Be conscious of your body relaxing, little by little, head to
toe, with each cleansing breath of life you take.
If there's a phrase or word that has calm meaning to you,
say it in your mind with each exhale.
Anytime your mind starts to wander, gently gather it in with
the next breath, and hold your focus to you.
Let the anxiety go, and inhale a purpose and focus with
each breath you take. With practice, you will be able to do
this in situations that bring anxiety to you. Breath it away.
You are, You can, You can do it.

It sounds alot like adult ADD (attention deficiency disorder) and could have developed from past marijuana. I have adult ADD and have to constantly be doing something or be very stimulated in conversation. Even then I tend to wonder or lose focus on the current issue or topic. But the one thing that ADD people can do, is think about, resolve and do many things all at the same time. I bet you have to have the TV or stereo going while you study, but yet get good grades and have a firm understanding to the topic, although you are not involved in all the tiny details. This too is normal for adult ADD.
I use two things, the first is Ginseng, I like drinking it as a tea, but you can take it in capsule form. It's awesome and can be the biggest help for ADD persons.
Since I'm older and I have alot of stress with balancing home, career, husband, employees and children and anything else I can take on; I have sudden mood swings of the blues. For this I use St. John's Wort to control that part.
For now, try the Ginseng and should the blues ever come about, add St. John's Wort.
Best to you and remember...You're not abnormal, just simply above average and don't let it get you down.

-Meditation-to clear the mind (books/CDs at library)
-Yoga-for healthy body and mind (also library)
-Chamomile Tea-relaxing
-Lavender candles, incense, bath/body products = very relaxing
-Valerian Root = over-the-counter supplement (in vitamin aisle of mostly all stores)--you should really try Sleepytime Extra Tea with Valerian, first--as it has much less Valerian than the supplements (to see if it agrees with you).
-Plenty of daytime, outdoor air and exercise--walking every morning, afternoon and evening is great physically and mentally.
-Drastically cut down on caffeine (quit, if possible--you may need to wean yourself off gradually).
If by chance none of the above work (though some should), please do see a doctor...make your life the best it can be.
You can also go to:
http://www.about.com
where you can find out a lot about panic and anxiety disorders (and many other mental disorders). Just type the word anxiety in their search box (upper right), and it will bring you to where you will find causes, symptoms and treatments.
About.com also has an Alternative Medicine newsletter (or you can just read on-site)--just as you have both options in the mental health section.

Valerian Root ia the pure form of Valium:) It works much the same as xanax... kinda a oh well it's all ok attitude. LOL. kinda nice when you are stressed. Chamomile tea or a bath with a tea ball of the leaves run under the hot water works well too. Deep breathing helps too.

Time and time again I have heard it from people with anxiety or anxiety disorder say no to meds. I'm an anxious person and have been all my life. I control it with meds. If you had M.S. or cancer or heart disease, would you refuse meds? Of course not. It's the same with anxiety disorder only it's mental and not physical and that's the hangup. Do yourself a favor and see a psychiatrist and discuss your problem with him or her. In the meantime, here is a website you may enjoy reading. www.panicsurvivor.com. Good luck.
