Today i tried to hook up a cd player from a car to my boat. I hooked the yellow (hot wire) directly to the + terminal of the batt and the black ground wire to the - terminal. i know it was hot but the Cd player did not come on. what could be the problem. fuse was good. the cd player hasnt been used in a while and i may have been bumped around because it was in the trunk for a while. if the deck is broken can i just buy another car stereo and hook it up the same way or do i have to go marine. i have a caseing for it installed in the center console to keep it from the elements.. oh and its an 18' sea pro center console

In almost all CD players you have a "memory" wire, which most often is the yellow one and the red one is "hot", but sometimes it's the other way around. In any case, this memory wire is simply a constant 12 volts so it can remember the time and the preset stations, and then when you supply 12 volts to the hot, that's when it comes on. Most CD players won't turn on unless both the memory and the hot have 12 volts supplied to them.

you got 4 votes on the 1st answer and I agree with the wiring as suggested by all 5 _____ but ,,, it is my opinion that you should bench test the radio-cd before you re-install the deck --- that is a bunch of wiring the may seem unnecessary but it is worth the trouble... is this also a radio -- like am-fm ....and do you have an antenna .... if this cd-player is old it may skip a bunch on the waves and distort the songs -- if you buy another deck be sure that it has very good '''anti-skip''' --- good luck with the cd.....
