does your paper carrier walk across your lawn? Explain why the grass often appears dead along the paper carrier's path, even in early spring. Why does the grass next to the path appear much healthier?

No our paperboy is very good BUT our mailman has a lot of difficulty differentiating between lawn and sidewalk!!!!

We get the news from other written sources.
The grass often appears dead along the path because the soil is compacted and not able to breathe, so to speak. However, if a person were to scatter some hay along the path and leave undisturbed, within 6-8 weeks of ample moisture, grass would be reproducing again.
