It means the batter got a hit. Usually when they use that term, its a ball hit into the outfield that lands safely in the grass without being caught by a defender.

To hit safely simply means to get a base hit (not make an out)

just a hit between player. between a gap.
remember ...... baseball was a radio sports first and had to make it interesting to keep people glued to the radio station. lots of old words are part of the modern game.
