Doing an informal survey here. Which scandal was worse, Pete Rose or Tim Donaghy, and why. Best answer will be chosen based on depth of response, regardless of which side is taken.

Without knowing yet all the details, I'd still have to go with Donaghy.

According to the Dowd Report, and Rose's own admission, the only bets he placed involving his own team were bets that the Reds would win. There was never any evidence uncovered that he bet against his team. It's still very, very wrong, but at least he never "threw" games - instead, he probably tried very desperately to win every one. As a manager, he's also limited in what he can do, as compared to a player on the field or an official, who can tank a play or make a bad call purposely.

Donaghy's actions, while still not completely known, are likely to have impacted the outcome of games more than anything Rose did. He had the power to change games just enough to play with the spread. Even if he never changed the ultimate outcome of a game - deciding a winner or loser - he likely had a much bigger influence than Rose. His influence was also more widespread, in that it didn't matter which teams happened to be playing.

Both are bad, but point-shaving is about as bad as it gets. Rose's actions caused an uproar, but what Donaghy has done could give the NBA the kind of black eye they haven't had in 25 years.

They are both black eyes for their respective leagues.

But...

Tim Donaghy is a NBA ref. He can affect a game in so many ways. His actions jeopardizes the way we watch sports. We are supposed to wonder if refs are just blind, or really stupid when a call goes against your team. But to know that he IS actually on The Take and really IS screwing your team, then that is a whole new ballgame.

I'm pretty sure Rose bet on the Reds to win everytime, atleast, I hope if he did bet on baseball, he left that slightest bit of integrity on the shelf at home.

I really hope this is an isolated incident, cause this can ruin the way we enjoy sports forever.

Pete Rose far and beyond anything that this guy Donaghy did.....close in some ways but Rose lied to even his friends that defended him for years (Mike Schmidt for one) and then let them down by admitting that he had bet on baseball after all....he is a "skummy" (be there such a word) character and does not deserve to be in the hall of fame......but would just give it to him to shut him up and see what he would say in his day of induction......he cheated and should have "fessed" up right away....we are forgiving people ....he instead milked it and in my opinion is still milking it!!!
